Gina Gershon: Bye Bye Birdie, La Di Da Sunday Morning

Gina Gershon is at work rehearsing for her new Broadway musical...a revival of the old Broadway musical "Bye Bye Birdie." The roles originally played by Chita Rivera and Dick Van Dyke will be taken by Gina, and John Stamos. Even for those who know Gina's got a great singing voice, this has to come as a bit of a shock. There's no tune in that 1963 show that bears a trace of sultry eroticism...so if Gina can pull it off, there will be people pulling it off in every row.
Gina's last appearance on Broadway was taking over the Sally Bowles role in a revival of "Cabaret," a show much more suited to her (as the picture above would indicate).
To give you an idea of how emotive Gina can be, listen to "La Di Da Sunday Morning," a track used on the soundtrack to the justly obscure film "Beer for my Horses." The tune has a bit of Spaghetti western whistling, a dash of Dylan's "One More Cup of Coffee," and a dark sexuality that could've lured Lee Hazlewood to his doom:
"Senorita, would you like to dance with me?"
I lifted up my dress and said, "Do you like what you see?"

When Gina Gershon opened her "In Search of Cleo" shows with "Lucky Lips," she inspired me to pay some lip service to this catchy (and/or stupid) tune as covered by:
Swinging Ruth Brown, perky Gale Storm, retro mod Maria Vincent (closest to Gina's stage version) and gigolo Cliff Richard who also supplies his German-language version titled "Rote Lippen." I've also included the Peter Kraus German cover-version and....
....a pair of semi-pro lounge performers, the duo of Carlo and Jolanda Hartentwee (of the Netherlands) and Zurich's plucky Joanna Schneiter.
If you're really into this (and there's no reason you should be) you'll note how the lyrics change depending on gender (what would a guy rhyme with "lips" in place of "diamond clips") and the foreigners add some fun by pronunciations of "Locky Lips" and "Lucky Leaps."

Gershon's always had a strong interest in hyphenating her fame, as in "actress-singer" and she's gotten some creds to back her up, from her movie "Prey for Rock & Roll" to a brief stint in Broadway's "Cabaret" (I think second or third to replace Brooke Shields, who was second or third to replace the original star of this second or third revival).
Her first solo album arrives any day now. Despite the Mylene Farmer goth cover idea (tears of blood) it's strong mainstream pop, although there may be one or two songs that carry too much of a country tinge.
Years ago, at some goofy press-party that drew Robin Williams and other celebs (Griffin Dunne fitting into the latter) I noticed a wickedly attractive girl moving about the periphery, and she gave me a sexy, assured stare when I walked over and took a few pix. She hadn't made a hit film yet, and somebody told me her name was "Tina."
Years later, nostalgically checking pages of chromes in various looseleaf bindings of party and event pix, I recognized that my mysterious "Tina" had become the goth, humorous, exotic, erotic, fascinating actress singer GINA...
She's still in the illfolks category because she's not yet renowned as a singer, and infamous mostly for her ill roles in "Bound" and "Showgirls." Perhaps her debut CD will vault her past cult status and out of my clutches.
When, in any fit of masturbatory homage, you purr her name, she pronounces it GEE-nah, grrrr-SHON. First name accent on first syllable, second name accent on second syllable. Now listen...
